Bridging the gap in education: The story of the Ozge Social Project
Author: Aruzhan Amirzhanova
The project is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which advocates for quality education for all. By providing these resources to rural students, Ozge seeks to reduce the educational disparity between urban and rural areas and create opportunities for students to pursue higher education and build better futures.
Ozge is a social initiative founded in 2023 by MhD Habib Abdullah and Sandugash Orynbay, aimed at addressing educational inequality in rural Kazakhstan. The project’s core mission is to provide students from underprivileged rural areas with free preparatory courses in key subjects like English, IELTS, and SAT preparation. The goal is to empower these students to access higher education opportunities that they might otherwise be unable to afford, particularly at top universities like Nazarbayev University.
Overcoming Challenges
Like any ambitious project, Ozge has encountered its share of challenges. Initially, the founders lacked experience in implementing educational programs within the specific context of Kazakhstan, which made the first phase of the project difficult. Their initial ambition was to recruit 100 students, but they quickly realized that managing such a large cohort, particularly in an online format, would be challenging. Some students struggled with the online nature of the program, and a few participants dropped out. However, these setbacks provided valuable learning experiences. The team adapted their approach by focusing on more strategic recruitment and providing more consistent support to students throughout the program. With these adjustments, they gained valuable insights that will help them improve the project for future cohorts.
Creating Lasting Impact
Ozge is focused not just on providing immediate academic support but on creating a lasting impact that will benefit future cohorts and communities. One of the project’s core components is its mentorship model, where each student is paired with a mentor who offers personalized guidance throughout the application process and academic support. Additionally, Ozge organizes mock tests, workshops, and campus tours to familiarize students with the expectations of top universities like Nazarbayev University. The ongoing mentorship and support are designed to help students even after completing the preparatory courses, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in higher education and beyond.
Ozge’s long-term vision is to create a sustainable network of support that continues to help students access quality education and navigate the transition to university life.
Looking ahead: Second Cohort of Ozge
Looking forward, Ozge’s future is bright. The team plans to expand the project’s reach to more rural areas in cities like Almaty and Shymkent, offering preparatory courses to even more students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The founders are focused on creating a sustainable network that will provide continuous support to students, enabling them to access top-tier education opportunities. Their ultimate goal is to ensure that every student, regardless of their background, has an equal opportunity to succeed academically and build a better future. By expanding their impact and refining their approach, the founders are determined to help more rural students achieve their dreams of higher education, contributing to a more equitable educational landscape in Kazakhstan.
