SDG Week 2025
A series of events, dedicated to raising awareness about sustainability
among students and youth

From March 11 to 15, SDSN Youth Kazakhstan held its very own Sustainable Development Goals Week, in collaboration and support from SDSN Kazakhstan, Office of Sustainable Development, Urban Forum Kazakhstan, Chevron, NU Image, and Eco Awareness Hub. The week consisted of multiple events, the details of which are provided below.

Event #1: Quiz and Board Games on SDG
Project team: Environmental Goals Department

On March 11, there was a “Quiz & Board games on SDG” session, consisting of various activities for students in the lower atrium of the main campus. For instance, the SDG quiz activity involved questions related to the 17 goals, and the participants won sweets and prizes for their correct answers. As a highlight, the session included a unique board game, “City in the Heat”, which we received with the support of Urban Forum Kazakhstan and which was developed by the urbanists of Tabiğat Labs, with the support of Chevron. The game challenges participants, who form groups of 4-6 people, to create solutions for urban development, and they network with like-minded individuals in the process. It was a chance to dive into the world of innovations and creativity, as well as to develop solutions for an imaginary city of Zhastan that faced the realities of impeding climate change. This game was also conducted in other universities, such as Narxoz University, AlmaU, and DKU, and it was thrilling to show and share it with the NU community, too.

Event #2: Display of Coffee Cups
Project team: Environmental Goals Department

On March 12, two towers made of plastic cups were displayed in upper atrium. Reusable cups were shown as an alternative, along with the relevant campus discounts for coffee. Students also had a chance to receive a free reusable cup for a subscription. The event was hosted in collaboration with NU Green Society.

Event #3: Movie screening: "The True Cost"
Project team: Societal Progress Department

There was also a special Movie screening & discussion session for the movie “The True Cost” with professor Zhanna Kapsalyamova as our expert guest speaker. “The True Cost” is a movie about the environmental and social issues behind fast fashion that are not reflected on the cost of the products. Screening of this movie provoked a thoughtful discussion about the unsustainable processes behind big industries such as the fashion industry and led to rethink society’s customer behaviour. Professor Zhanna Kapsalyamova acted as a guest speaker, helping lead the discussion with the audience. Many sustainable development goals are estimated to be covered by the event: reduced inequalities, affordable and clean energy, and sustainable cities and communities.

Event #4: Art Therapy Day
Project team: Environmental Goals Department

On March 13, there was a relaxing Art Therapy Day, where creativity meets nature! This free event was designed to help students to unwind, express themselves, and connect with art. It featured two workshops: Painting with Nature and Candle Making Workshop. The workshops were meant as a recharging break in the middle of the busy study week. It was organized in collaboration with an active leadership project, Eco Awareness Hub, as well as SDSN Kazakhstan and Office of Sustainable Development.
Event #5: "Planet in Pixels", Photo Art Exhibition
Project team: Societal Goals Department, Aruzhan Talgatova

Furthermore, during the SDG Week, a special Photo Art Exhibition was organized, in collaboration with NU Image. The exhibition featured a collection of new and archival works that reflect the essence of SDGs. Photographers were requested to reflect creatively on the meaning of sustainable development. The topics included quality education, gender equality, affordable and clean energy, industry, innovation, and infrastructure, responsible consumption, and other related SDGs. By displaying the photographs, we aimed to inspire engagement within our community and promote a creative perspective on SDGs.
