Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Kazakhstan 2023, co-organized by the team of UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network – Youth Kazakhstan, Sustainable Development Solutions Network Kazakhstan, Nazarbayev University Office of Sustainable Development, Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Public Policy NU Green Society and held on September 28 at NU.
LCOY Kazakhstan 2023 is a truly pivotal event within the framework of the mission at SDSN Youth Kazakhstan. This annual conference brought together young leaders, researchers, and experts from across Kazakhstan to engage in meaningful dialogues and actions centered on climate change and sustainable development.
SDSN Youth Kazakhstan was chosen and endorsed as the official organizer of this annual conference in Kazakhstan this year by YOUNGO, official youth and children constituency of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC UN
Over 60 young delegates from Karagandy, Almaty, and Astana participated in-person in panel sessions on water management issues, food security, local solutions to sustainability issues, and adaptation to climate change, with many more joining online. Participants could also enhance their knowledge of climate science with the Climate Fresk game.
The conference set itself the following goals: to facilitate discussions and knowledge-sharing on climate change, sustainable development, and their intersection, empower young leaders to voice their perspectives and solutions, forge connections between youth, experts, and stakeholders, and, perhaps most importantly, produce a joint statement capturing the vision of Kazakhstani youth regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
The conference provided a platform for panel discussions on a wide range of topics, including "Climate change in Kazakhstan," "Assessing the impact of climate change on the water sector," "Local solutions for climate change adaptation," "The importance and future prospects of mass adoption and utilization of green and sustainable energy in Kazakhstan," among others.
This statement will be presented at 18th Global Conference of Youth (COY 18), a sideline event of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP 28), in Dubai, UAE, later this year. It will play a major role in influencing the decisions and recommendations made by government representatives and stakeholders, including the valuable insights of youth.
Embassy of UAE in Kazakhstan gave a speech about COP28 UAE, the European Union in Kazakhstan and the British Embassy in Kazakhstan’s representatives were also among the key-note speakers
