Background: Several clubs and PSIR faculty had a week of planned activities as a part of “Respect. Empower. Prevent” campaign on the campus of Nazarbayev University. They collaborated with July 25th, the directors’ club, and released a video raising awareness about the importance of recognizing harassment cases. They put “What is a Red Flag for you” board and distributed stickers in lower atrium along with talking to students about types of sexual harassment and the available contacts. They negotiated with professors and held 5-7 minute presentations at large lectures on the topic of detecting harassment and reporting. They put posters with a contact list of faculty members in study blocks for students to reach out to in case of experiencing harassment. Lastly, they held a panel discussion “Ensuring Safe Space in Academia” with professors, researchers and students to answer burning questions about the culture of respect and sustainable solutions for preventing harassment in academic institutions. The panel gathered more than 60 participants from the representatives of student bodies of Astana universities and civic activists. The campaign has a direct focus on SDG 5, contributing to the creation of zero-tolerance culture to any forms of harassment, sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination.
Objectives: The primary aim is to educate the NU community and Astana residents about the various types of harassment and promote a safe and respectful environment for everyone. The campaign seeks to empower individuals to speak up against gender-based and sexual harassment, violence, and objectification. It strives to prevent it by fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity. Through various events and activities and consultations with the administration of universities, we ultimately hope to create a lasting positive impact in the community by means of policy changes.
