Nazarbayev University and SDSN Kazakhstan participate in the Water Security and Climate Change Conference in Tashkent

NU delegation, represented by Dr. Serik Orazgaliyev, NU GSPP Associate Professor and Co-Chair of SDSN Kazakhstan, Dr. Aliya Assubayeva, NU GSPP Assistant Professor, Dr. Kamilya Yessimbet, Postdoctoral Scholar, Yelif Ulagpan, NU GSPP PhD Student, and Bauyrzhan Zhomart, NU GSPP MPA Student, participated in the 9th Water Security and Climate Change Conference (WSCC) in Tashkent from 8–10 October 2025.

This year, WSCC was hosted by the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers (Uzbekistan), previously organized in Thailand, Germany, Kenya, Mexico, Vietnam, and Ecuador. The conference attracted a wide range of participants from across the world under the theme “Innovative Approaches for Sustainable Water & Environmental Management,” with thematic areas on data-driven solutions, water for food and environmental systems, and coping with climate-related extremes.

The SDSN Kazakhstan team actively contributed to the conference’s research exchange through poster presentations. Dr. Aliya Assubayeva presented Water Policy Analysis via LLMs: Legal Integration of River Basin Management and the Polluter-Pays Principle. Yelif Ulagpan and Bauyrzhan Zhomart presented preliminary results on Agricultural Policy and Sustainability in Kazakhstan: A Critical Discourse Analysis and Urban Water Management: The Case of Turkestan, respectively. Participation in WSCC25 provided valuable opportunities to strengthen regional and international partnerships, exchange ideas, and share research on water security, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Central Asia and beyond.

The WSCC is a testament to the power of international cooperation and knowledge exchange. Through the support of the “Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation – exceed” program and the collaborative efforts of the Sustainable Water Management in Developing Countries network (SWINDON), the Centers for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD), the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), the Food Security Center (FSC), and the SDGnexus Network, the conference has grown into a global platform for addressing water security challenges.

The SDGnexus Network and the WSCC2025 are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) using funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), SDGnexus Network (grant number 57753302), which is part of the program "exceed 2025–2029: Hochschulexzellenz in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit."
